Quantum Commodity Intelligence – Green ammonia producer TalusAg confirmed Maxam is using its containerized green ammonia production system to create clean explosives, in an interview with Quantum on Thursday.
TalusAg’s green ammonia production will be used to produce clean ammonium nitrate explosives at the Spanish mining company’s Páramo de Masa location in Spain, said TalusAg chief executive Hiro Iwanaga.
The partnership is the first of its kind in Europe, and Talus’s third commissioning of its talusOne modular production system. TalusOne can produce between 300-500mt of green ammonia annually on 1 megawatt of power.
The system was commissioned around a 2-3 month timeline, the shortest commissioning process for TalusAg, said Iwanaga to Quantum. The first two system deployments took between 6-9 months in the US.
This is a new market for TalusAg, which originally focused upon nitrogen fertiliser production. But the green ammonia start-up has the opportunity to decarbonise the mining sector, with the ability to scale quickly, said Iwanaga.
The green explosives production will reduce Maxam’s carbon footprint by up to 95%, said the company late last month.
